My Remarks for “Free Typographic XHTML/CSS-Layouts for Your Designs”

Most of the visually impressive designs in “Free Typographic XHTML/CSS-Layouts for Your Designs”—yet it is quite easy for me to pick out the layouts that I might use because of my planned departure from Web layouts that attempt to mimic magazine or newspaper design. The opinion here is that Web design should start from designs for DVD and “interactive television.”

  • So, “Goliath” by Emanuel Kluge is attractive.
  • Simon Gattner from Berlin, Germany has “viCard”.
  • Ihsan Satria Rama from Indonesia has “Ihsanrama”—this is a great solution for a two-column screen (not built for scrolling).
  • Victor Abadio from Brazil has “Whoo!” for a widescreen format.
  • Bjørn Friese from Denmark has “Pink Elephant.”
  • Gary Simon from Ohio has “TypoGra” which shows me how a Blog layout can ‘suggest’ no need to scroll.‘No need to scroll’ does not mean scrolling will not occur in my planned designs. My goal is avoid scrolling the entire layout such that the so-called header must disappear (usually to meet some advertising density quota).

When I write ‘widescreen’ I literally mean that my layouts will have dimensions that use standard resolutions for widescreen monitors. This chart of video standards shows me that I am likely to use these base dimensions:

  • SVGA (800×600)—I have been using this resolution extensively for years.
  • WSVGA (1024×600)—this is the next step for me.
