S3 Promises and Other Links

Userscript.org and Amazon S3” suggests that S3 can be used to seamlessly integrate S3 storage with ‘traditional’ Linux storage. From ignorance I emerge with no expectations that ‘traditional’ web hosting companies will make this technique easy and documented for us “shared hosting” customers.

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition User Instances

The technology Microsoft calls “SQL Server 2005 Express Edition User Instances” is the closest thing I can find to detailed documentation about connecting to and opening SQL Server databases by ‘loading’ a file. “When the AttachDBFilename keyword is included in a connection string, the specified file is attached to the SQL Server instance and the client is connected to the newly attached database.”

PowerShell Has No rsync Power

It was disappointing to see the PowerShell script listed in “Backup Files Using Windows PowerShell.” This script implies that you have to use dates to compare files for backup procedures. Certainly the Microsoft rationale would be that not having the equivalent of rsync built into Windows is because “no one cares” about rsync. The opinion here is that a true genius developed rsync and for some very interesting reasons (yet to be revealed to me) Microsoft cannot reproduce this genius.

Heh, after the recent software patent 'covenant' b/t M$ and Novell, I would not expect the Redmond wooly mammoth to willingly admit that they might use F/OSS tools in any of their proprietary software. Hooray for the GPL ;)
