WordPress Upgrade Strategy for DreamHost.com

DreamHost.com has this “one click” upgrade thing that works quite well for new installs. Even though the WordPress interface suggested (to me) that it can install over an existing WordPress application, this is apparently not possible. An automated email from DreamHost.com ‘told’ me that this is not possible. It writes, “Please re-install, specifying an empty (or new) directory.”

I’ve upgraded WordPress before but this time the functional portions of DreamHost.com will be used. Here’s the complex, lengthy plan:

  • Rename the old WordPress folder.
  • Generate a new, empty WordPress folder.
  • Run the DreamHost.com installer against the new folder. The complex and lengthy parts include getting rid of Spam Karma 2 in favor of askimet (perhaps) and importing my CSS stuff (template(s)) into the new site.
