Microsoft Word Links

It’s rare to find links about Microsoft Word issues that relate to my document-centric data management needs. “Restrict formatting of a document” suggests that Microsoft Word can be used to map styles to XML elements—in my case, XHTML elements. Word 2007 has an explicit mapping tool in the Word 2007 Content Control Toolkit. Both of these references are just of feats of optimism.

Now what’s closer to the bloated reality of Microsoft Word is “XML files may open in Internet Explorer instead of opening in the expected Office program when the ContentType header contains the charset parameter.” This Internet Explorer behavior suddenly appeared after Word XML files opened correctly for years inside Word—so the fix does not seem to address the ‘real’ problem.

Of course we have the option of writing code to deal with Office annoyances and these three VSTO articles are of some value to me yet to be determined: “Deploying a Document and an Assembly to a Local Folder,” “Deploying a Document and an Assembly to Different Local Folders” and “Deploying a Document to a Local Folder, and an Assembly to a Network Folder.”
